I've done it both ways. For those I used only one database. In your wp-config.php page, there is a place that says:

/**
* WordPress Database Table prefix.
*
* You can have multiple installations in one database if you give each a unique
* prefix. Only numbers, letters, and underscores please!
*/
$table_prefix = 'wp_';

So I just numbered each one different. That is, I used:

$table_prefix = 'wp1_';
$table_prefix = 'wp2_';
$table_prefix = 'wp3_';

and so on in each different wp-config.php page.

Are you saying you use SEVEN complete Wordpress installs, in that when Wordpress updates, you have to update seven of them? If that is what you are indeed doing, I'd suggest you look into wordpress multi blog which will run as many wordpress installs, as you want, from one single set of core files, plus plugins and themes. So your upgrade time is cut to doing it for just one, which automatically updates all the others.

Oh, and I'd never suggest you use wp1 for you database tables. I always recommend to change it to something else, and even go to three or four characters, as that just makes it so easy for hackers..

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. Yeah it is 7 different ones. I wish I had known how to make different sidebars before I did that, as that would have done what I wanted to do. Oh well, live and learn, especially with the net!!

Just to note a comparison. I have 14 blogs on the virtual blog system, and 14 blogs on their own install. As Wordpress 3.0 is around the corner, I went an updated each of my blogs, plugins etc.

To me to update the 14 blogs with their own install 1 hr and 18 minutes
To update the virtual blogs with 12 plugin updates 4 minutes.

I think it works because I personally done it. You just need to export 1 blog and then import that file to your other blog. You might have to do some tweaking with the categories. Good luck!
