Just tried to access a blog via the admin login and it accepts the login details ok but when it then goes to wp-admin it brings up a 404 error. The actual front end of the blog works ok still and it is set at version 3.0.0

I have tried all the solutions I can find by searching for this problem like deleting the htaccess file (just brings up an internal error then), reuploading the main WP files and checking the permissions.

None of these made any difference!

Any other ideas?

Have you added any new plugins, when you last were able to get into the blog?

IF YES, then ftp in, delete that plugin from your folder, and try to log in again.

IF NO, have you tried for a password reset when you login with the username only?

Thanks but I haven't added anything plugin wise for ages, all worked fine on following the upgrade and only added a posting to it two weeks ago.

I tried deleting the plugins but that didn't let me in either

Did the lost password thing and again nothing - it isn't the fact that it isn't login in but that when it does it is implying that the page within "wp-admin" for the dashboard isn't there!

Next?

I've heard of this happening from time to time, and it's often a plugin problem (though that doesn't appear to be the case here). Anyway, next time, don't delete the plugins, just change the name of the plugin folder. That has the same effect without causing so much disruption in your install.

Just in case, try renaming the plugins dir and see what that does. Also check to see that your theme is there, and look at the file dates. Look for anything odd, like a newer date than it should be.

Finally, look at the htaccess file that controls the URL rewriting. It's the one that changes the permalinks. Rather than delete it (that usually causes more problems), hopefully you have a backup of it, so you can put it back in.

have you tried replacing the 'admin.php' page in the 'wp-admin' folder?

I always ensure I have a backup of everything, especially before I delete anything, so yes deleted htaccess file and made it worse so put it back and we are back to square one.

I deleted plugins folder, put it back and tried just renaming it and still no luck!

All dates look fine and theme files still in place....

I've posted on the WP support forum so hopefully someone will be able to come up with something else to try...

Finally got a reply from the hosting company - apparently there were multiple php.ini files within the site so they renamed them as backups and it is all working fine again!!!!!
