Been a while since I've thought about this or had time to look around at options. For some reason this morning, I started thinking about the list of services my WP sites are pinging. How much difference does it really make and is there really a difference between an adult site ping list and a mainstream site ping list?

One way or another, you're letting blogging resources and SE's know something has happened on your site and there is fresh meat.

Any current theories or approaches?

I ping is a ping whether its Adult or mainstream and I use the default one WP installs "pingomatic.com" - I know you can install others but from the research I did that seemed to do the job well

You're still better off just going to the Pingomatic Web site and doing a manual ping. With WP every edit is still pinged out, and one ping too many gets you on a black list of which there's no return (at best, it takes a while, like 6+ months), and there's no way of knowing your pings are ignored.

Most ping services will not relay porn content, and they use simple filters to determine what kind of blog you have. They don't tell you if your blog is blocked.

G and other SEs usually don't crawl the new post just because it's been pinged. You may get a quick check from their blog spider, but the post still goes into a queue waiting for full indexing, which may not occur for hours or even days. The regular G visits produce about the same frequency, assuming the blog is regularly updated.

As a BTW, if you do keep Pingomatic on, there's a plugin that only pings out on new posts. It won't re-ping edits (unless you tell it to). Recommended if you do automatic pinging.

can't think right now which ping plugin I have, but got one of them that limits WPs normal pinging and keeps it down to new posts

if you didn't change it it will be pingomatic as I'm pretty sure thats the default install by WP

WOW that is a huge list sort of almost as big as lunch menu

I use Maxblog Ping Optimizer but would love to find a different one. I am not enamored by his stuff anymore, nor does he upgrade the plugins as he used to, but sure sends out the spammy emails.

content I add onto my blogs normally ranks within 24 hours so whats the point in all the pinging?

HK, There are a number of duplicates in that list, and several are the ones Pingomatic does , which would cause a double-ping. I recognize a few as hostile to porn. Technorati no longer accepts pings.

I'm assuming this is a master list of sorts, or otherwise if you used this list as-is it's a sure road to being blocked. Just a heads up. It's usually better to have a small, hand-picked list of pings, even to rotate among them if your site is A) adult nature in any way and/or B) you post more than once a day.
