Has anyone used the themes from StudioPress Themes - some of these magazine style theme are really nice -

Has anyone build a magazine style blog they care to share ? I would have though the content (text) will be where most will struggle as these tend to be quite word heavy

Yeah, I've got one still happening, but in all honesty, its not really what I'd call a "magazine" theme, as most really aren't. They are merely layout that just, well sucks in my view. There are a ton out there, that have multiple excerpts on the front page, some with thumbs, some without.

They are good, when you use a custom excerpt, that goes beyond the WP one. The biggest issue, is that any 'magazine' theme should include a featured image, that isn't too small. Some really do a bad job of resizing, to make the thumbnail worthless.

I've been wanting to do a magazine blog for a while - but its feeding enough content into the thing to make it work well - but I do like the overhaul look of them

Yeah the look can be impressive, but you know, most of them are so cluttered with gimmicks, that invariably, something goes amiss, especially if you customize it, then look out come the next update.

One guy whose designs I love, just never work out of the box, least for me. And he's always throwing in updates, that makes you start all over again, so gave up on his stuff. Nice looking, but I'd rather spend my time writing the posts, not figuring out how to get them to show up.

but isn't it the "cluttered" look that makes these look good?

This one I like StudioPress Theme Demo - OK its not a free theme but I don't mind spending the $50 for a good layout

My worry is these themes work because of the images and thats where I could stumble - especially if its on the contacts theme as the theme wouldn't look good with edited members photos being displayed

Nice theme, seen a few free one's like that as well.

Cluttered look of the theme is fine, part of the charm. What I was talking about was the cluttered code that some use, that makes it nearly impossible to figure out, unless you are a code jockey. Finding the right css class can become a huge nightmare in those themes.

agree they can take a bit of effort - but its only a pain once as once you get the layout sorted how you want the rest is just getting feeding the content

I've used this one

Insight Magazine Theme | WordPress Theme Designer

It's okay, but the CSS layout isn't great so changes are harder than they should be.

I found it on a freebie templates site. Don't get it from the source site as they want you to pay for PSDs (not worth it), or tweet to get it free.

For paid, this guy's stuff doesn't stink:

Press75.com|Exceptional WordPress Themes

He's got a couple of magazine-style themes. Excellent support.

Interesting. When I got my On Demand from him, he suddenly closed up shop, moved elsewhere, and closed his site down. Now it is back up, so VG, have you found his support really helpful? He's got that $75 deal where you can download any themes for two months. Interesting. hate giving him more money though, from how he just disappeared and quit his support way back when I got the theme

Do like how he's improved the On Demand theme as well, Might be worth a shot, same with his tv and elements themes

I bought one once but made the mistake of getting it in Joomla (don't ask), never used it. My feeling is you would have to use it for the correct type of site, and I just don't feel adult anywhere in most of them.

Are we talking about two different guys here? The fellow that runs Press75 seems to have stuck to it, as far as I can tell. I don't regularly visit his site, and I know (based on an email he sent to all his customers) that about a year ago he got DDOSed by someone for a few days. Other than that, I haven't noticed any down-time, and I bought my copy of On Demand after you did.

Last June I got an automated email from him to download On Demand 2.0, which was within the free one year upgrade cycle. Got it, but haven't upgraded that site yet (WP upgrades yes, but not On Demand, as I made a lot of manual tweaks to it).

On the support side, he seems to answer the questions on the forum (which is not visible unless you log in) within a few hours.

Sounds like the same guy, think he joined up with some other guy, have to dig the info up, though not a priority. Press 75 was closed as a friend of mine joined his affiliate program as well, and got stiffed when it all happened. Either way do i like his latest rendition of On Demand, 3 I think.
