For anybody who has been through any decent sized earthquake, just the idea of the recent ones are pretty friggn scary. I've been through a few 5.x quakes that were freaky, including one slow roller that lasted about 30 seconds. I was also in the Bay Area when the Loma Perata quake hit - that was soooooo not fun...

Just the thought of a quake that big lasting for 3 minutes is mind blowing to me. Now... here is something else rather mind blowing... An entire city in Chile that was moved 10 FEET to the West?!

Chile Earthquake Moved Entire City 10 Feet to the West | Wired Science | Wired.com - StumbleUpon

I've never looked at this info before, but check out this list of 5.0+ quakes in the last 7 days - many are aftershocks related to the one in Chile.
Latest Earthquakes M5.0+ in the World - Past 7 days

I was talking with my son over the weekend after the quake hit Turkey and he was wondering why all the quakes lately. I asked him what's one of the first things he does when he gets up in the morning - STRETCH! Well... it's like the Earth needs a bit of a stretch lately and the plates are shifting all at once. Geeze, you get one plate shifting that much in one place, somethings got to give someplace else!

We had a earthquake here in Hawaii yesterday but it was samll. I did not feel the first one but it came on the news "alert alert" like there was anything I could do after the fact. When I was watching the news my dog barked and I felt the bed moving but just a little bit. But my dog knew before it hit!! Good dog bad earth.

that's the fun of animals - they know long before we do!

I remember one of the bigger ones I felt, saw the news very shortly after with the same type of 'alert alert'. There was just an earthquake! Yeah, like no $%&@!

I was in a 7.6 in El Salvador in 2001. The picture below shows an area of San Salvador being covered by a landslide. It covered something like 100 houses. From where I was you could see smoke in the air which turned out to be dust from the landslide.

I was in a supermarket at the time. Everybody went screaming out of the building, so I just waited which is what they tell you to do. Then I looked up and the false ceiling looked like a huge wave that was about to fall so I ran out of there trailing most people. It's amazing to see a massive panic like that.
