Can someone tell me how fast your upload and download speeds are for your sites? I wanna upgrade my internet speeds and I'm thinking 2Mbps upload should be good enough.

With my ISP right now I got 1.5 Mbps download speed and .384Kbps upload speed. The upload speed is killing me and hurting my sites cause it's so slow.

I went to a speed checker site and typed in my domain name to get my speeds.

Dunno, ask Brent

Remember your ISP isn't the weak point in the link, the network is. I've never had an upload speed more than 750 ish K and a download of more than 1.2M or so. My ISP gives me 35M download, but it doesn't matter. That's just marketing.

What are the major hosting providers running on. They gotta be using massive pipes. Anything less then 1Mpbs and all those web hosts would slow to a crawl.

I'm using Covad DSL. On my home network here I got 4 computers running. When I turn off my server my internet starts to fly but when I turn the server back on everything bogs down.

The only thing that really runs that fast is the speed tests which are usually an image or some small file. My effective bandwidth is still just the 1.2 download.

DSL will be slower than cable, but on cable you have a lot of users sharing the same pipe. In the end DSL may actually be faster because you aren't sharing your connection. Like I said though, you are only going to be as fast as the network which is pretty slow still.

how does the cost compare from hosting yourself & by the looks of things paying for a faster access than using a good host?

Well the start up costs are definitely higher because you have to go out and build or buy your server. I spent maybe $700 to build it. Every few years I upgrade the motherboard and chips. I use FreeBsd and Apache and those are free so no worries there.

My monthly fees are for my internet. That runs me $75 a month. Now I haven't hosted since 05 and back then I think I was paying around $65 a month for hosting. I don't know how much hosting has gone down since then but I never have to worry about them fucking with my servers when im not looking or accidentally screwing with my account. Electricity isnt much maybe $25 more for that one server.

The only problem I have now is my speed is killing me. My main site has been getting more and more people and that's slowing down my whole network here.

surely it would be cheaper to let someone else have the pain of hosting looking at those figures? even if you wanted your own rack I'm sure the costs would be on par with what your spending assuming you even needed that and could just get by with shared hosting

If you know what you're doing then hosting your own sites is no pain. In fact to me it's a bigger pain in the ass having to deal with hosts. I've heard too many horror stories on these forums concerning web hosts, problems which I can solve on my own in a matter of minutes on my own servers. I never have to wait for anyone to upgrade my software or configure a new site. Oh if you only new the power of a root account on a server.

I don't even know how much a host would cost me. What does a good hosting account go for these days?

I've never had problems other than the odd downtime - but thats part of the fun

As for hosting I pay a lot more than you guys in US as my choices are limited due to lack of adult hosts in the UK but I've seen US based ones offering some very good deals

I just looked up prices. On Gatorhost for a dedicated system comparable to what I got they charge $139 a month. About $40 more then what I pay.

yeah but your having to consider a faster connection and an upgrade on your server at some stage, plus you don't have to worry if your not around and something goes wrong or down - for me that $40 is easily lost and I wouldn't worry about it

An upgrade to the server will cost me $200 and last me 3 or 4 years. My upgrade pays for itself in 5 months. An upgrade in my internet connection if I go with cable will be about what im paying now for dsl and should be faster if im to believe what im reading. I don't know why dsl is so much more for slower speeds. I do understand that on a cable network you are competing for resources from other cable subscribers but im thinking on their business class setup that wont be an issue. So economically if you can host your own sites, it's cheaper and comes without the headaches if you know what you're doing.

Plus if you're paying for a dedicated server you still have to pay for your own home internet whatever that price is. Let's say $20. So you're looking at $160 a month. No thanks.
