All I know is that I belong to a few private mainstream groups. They are always complaining that hostgator puts too many accounts on their virtual servers. So even with an upgraded account they have problems. Basically they are becoming another godaddy.

They don't want good successful webmasters. They want hundreds of losers who make a 5 page personal site and get only 5 hits a day. That's how they make the most money. I use Hawk host and love them, but you pay for what you get.

Also I was just reading a rant about how Hostgator will sneak in links to their own site on 404 pages when you use some of their webpage building software. GoDaddy also does that but puts a link in the footer.

just goes to show nothing comes for free - if you use something provided "free" expect some payback ......but isn't that life.......would you give something away without expecting something in return? even the so called free blogs tend to have an author signature that a lot of webmasters leave in place...........not me

I wouldn't mind that as long as it was only on 404 pages. If I found their ads implanted on the code of my own pages tho, I would be pissed. The only webpage building software I use is a 10 year old version of dreamweaver so I should be safe.
