hopefully this time the public will start giving G the finger when the media starts shouting about G spying on ALL its services now ........you really have to wonder WTF they are playing at making a statement like this, whilst webmasters and "some" of the public maybe aware of G spying putting out such a public statement like this is going to piss people off ..............GOOD

Google announces privacy changes across products; users can’t opt out

Google will soon know far more about who you are and what you do on the Web.

The Web giant announced Tuesday that it plans to follow the activities of users across nearly all of its ubiquitous sites, including YouTube, Gmail and its leading search engine.

Google has already been collecting some of this information. But for the first time, it is combining data across its Web sites to stitch together a fuller portrait of users.

Consumers won’t be able to opt out of the changes, which take effect March 1...

Actually Yes, I do think so. Perhaps not so much in the USA, but it is a hot topic in many European Countries, and Canada. I guess many in the USA have come to expect it, because of the post 911 era, but honestly, I think people are becoming more concerned. Even Facebook had to adjust its privacy policies to be more stringent.

As to Google, well it is too George Orwellian for me, but then this world is becoming too fragmented between the elite and the rest of us peons.

What do people expect when they readily hand over their entire portfolio of personal information.

Easy fix. Don't ever give your real name, address, phone number or credit cards when signing up with them. Operate under an alias and problem solved.

Nobody's safe, one reason I never started a gmail account: "A user signing up for Gmail, for instance, might never have imagined that the content of his or her messages could affect the experience on seemingly unrelated Web sites such as YouTub"

The internet is so easy to check or track anyone, the fact the a company like G is pushing the envelope is not surprising. This is just the tip of the iceberg...

so thats directly tell surfers they are looking at Gmail accounts and then using that data within the serps......if that doesn't piss people nothing will

But I don't think so. See, your contacts and communication still wouldn't be "aliased".

I don't think this will piss them off at all. I actually explained to my not-technical gf how it works, and she was like "wow, that's horrible". And then, "well, I can't feel bad now. I'm logging to facebook to see what's new".

People spread their data left and right, and many embrace this customized experience.

Btw. I've never seen a discussion about effects of this custom results on SEO, could it be that SEO will become less important?

whilst I agree people do like the custom features G offers to logged in users, what they don't realise is that G is feeding them the results "they" think they should be seeing rather than current information online - this stinks of big brother, more so now G is using Gmail data as well ........the problem is the public just hasn't really picked up on this

I don't think its becoming less important, but the problem you have with personal search is the more popular sites that are ranking and getting clicks for logged in users will always rank ...all you can hope you is people get fed up always seeing the same old sites ranking high and it will be interesting to see if sites that are ranking past the fold start seeing more traffic as punters scroll down for fresher sites.......the daft thing is if the muppets signed out those sites would appear at the top

Rude's question about all of this affecting SEO can probably easily be answered with one simple, three letter word.

YUP.

personalised search will have the biggest knock on for SEO - and one of the most stupidest of ideas I've seen for years, why keep showing people the same sites they have clicked on before it just doesn't make any sense

ah but it does, it allows for better more targetted ads from adsense, and more view, means more revenue

New goal: get in front of everyone's faces.

Oh, wait, everyone's #1 result will now always be Facebook, considering nobody can do without it nowadays.
